Every day, AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers are strengthening communities and tackling our nation's most pressing challenges. This year, as part of AmeriCorps Week, Mayors from across the country will join together thank those who serve and recognize their impact as part of Mayors Day for National Service on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.
History of Mayors Day and National Service Recognition Day
For nearly a decade, the first Tuesday in April was designated as National Service Recognition Day, led by AmeriCorps, the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, and Cities of Service. When the initiative first launched as Mayors Day in 2013, more than 800 mayors recognized the positive impact of AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers in their communities. Since then, thousands of local leaders including city council members, county commissioners, tribal leaders, and state legislators participated in what became known as National Service Recognition Day and continue leverage national service to help solve their community’s toughest challenges. Beginning in 2022, National Service Recognition Day activities were included in AmeriCorps Week.
