AmeriCorps, the federal agency for volunteering and service, announced nearly $10 million in grant funds to expand two key AmeriCorps Seniors programs: its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs in underserved or new communities across 16 states and Puerto Rico.

2021 AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program Funded Grants

The Foster Grandparent Program engages adults age 55 and over who help children in their communities develop academic and life skills critical to their development and future success. The AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers serve as tutors, mentors, and role models to children at risk of falling behind in school and to those with physical disabilities and/or other special needs. The intergenerational exchanges that occur build lasting bonds that benefit those who perform the service and those being served.

2021 AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Program Funded Grants

The Senior Companion Program engages adults age 55 and over help other older adults, most of whom are homebound, live fuller, more independent lives. The AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers provide companionship and assistance with daily tasks such as shopping or paying bills, and give respite to family caregivers. As a result, seniors are able to maintain their independence longer, allowing them to age in place, and their caregivers are able to take time to recharge or perform errands.
