FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 11, 2010

Washington, DC—Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, will join former AmeriCorps VISTA members U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (WV) and Representative Gwen Moore (WI) to honor the legacy and accomplishments of the program at a reception on Capitol Hill. The reception will be held on May 12 in 106 Dirksen SOB at 5:30 p.m.

Senator Daniel Inouye (HI), a long-time supporter of the poverty-fighting program established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, is also expected to provide remarks. Corporation Board Members Hyepin Im and Eric Tannenblatt will also attend. The reception occurs during the fourth annual AmeriCorps Week, May 8-15, a national effort to raise awareness about the impact the program has on addressing our national challenges.

AmeriCorps VISTAs served in nearly 1,000 anti-poverty programs – building capacity of nonprofits in education, employment, housing and financial development – raised over $183 million in support of local initiatives, and helped place more than 5,400 people in jobs through Recovery Act projects in FY 2009. A photo exhibit titled VISTA Redux: 1969 will be displayed in the Russell SOB Rotunda, May 10-14. The exhibit spotlights the youth, idealism, hope and poverty documented by AmeriCorps VISTA alumnus Federico Santi during his service in South Florida in the late 1960s.
