FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sep 03, 2010

MEDIA ADVISORY:

Washington, D.C. — Patrick A. Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-09) will hold a “Service as a Solution” Roundtable discussion on September 7 at the East Bay Community Foundation at 10 am. Immediately following the roundtable, the officials will hold a photo opportunity and press availability.

The “Service as a Solution” Roundtable will bring together government officials and social sector leaders to discuss ways that citizen service and volunteering can move the needle on the areas most pervasive problems – from high unemployment to skyrocketing dropout rates. With states and cities facing budget shortfalls, more officials are relying on national service to help fill the gaps and advance local priorities. Participants will donate a book in support of the East Bay Children’s Book Project to address the pressing literacy challenges among area youth, and as part of the Corporation’s United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move., a national initiative to combat summer reading lose.

After the roundtable, the Corporation will hold a grant workshop to provide nonprofit organizations information on available federal resources to support efforts to tackle local problems through service. The agency is the nation’s largest grantmaker for service and volunteering, and provided more than $75 million to organizations across California and $8 million in the Bay Area last year to support nonprofits through the work of its programs – AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Recently, the Corporation announced its 2011 AmeriCorps Notice of Funding Opportunity, and anticipates awarding approximately $311 million in grants.

Corvington will also tour an area AmeriCorps program, Experience Corps Bay Area, which tutors and mentors at-risk children in Oakland.
