WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Tuesday, April 5, more than 3,000 mayors, along with county officials and tribal leaders, from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico will participate in the fourth annual Mayor, County, and Tribal Recognition Day for National Service.

On this day, local leaders from large cities, small towns, rural areas, and tribal communities will hold events, issue proclamations, participate in service projects and use social media to thank AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers for their valuable impact on critical challenges in communities across the nation. 

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the Social Innovation Fund, leads this annual effort in collaboration with Cities of Service, the National Association of Counties, and the National League of Cities.

The day continues to gain support from a diverse group of mayors and county officials, with the number of participants growing four-fold since its inception in 2013. A full list of participating elected officials can be found here.

Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, and other CNCS senior leaders will join local leaders across the nation to celebrate Mayor, County, and Tribal Recognition Day for National Service. Spotlight events listed below.

CEO Wendy Spencer will join White Hall Mayor Noel Foster, Arkansas County Judge Thomas E. Best, Jefferson County Judge Dutch King and Senior Corps RSVP volunteers at a recognition and swearing-in ceremony in Pine Bluff, Ark. Later that day, she will join Mayor Mark Stodola at a recognition event for AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members in Little Rock, Ark. The following day, Spencer will join Mayor Jim Strickland at national service fair in Memphis, Tenn.

  • Director of AmeriCorps Bill Basl will join Mayor Richard J. Berry at a volunteer awards ceremony in Albuquerque, N.M.
     
  • Director of AmeriCorps VISTA Max Finberg will join Mayor Emeka Jackson-Hicks, AmeriCorps members, and Senior Corps volunteers at a recognition ceremony in East St. Louis, Ill., an Operation AmeriCorps site.
     
  • Acting Director of Senior Corps Mikel Herrington will join Mayor Mike Rawlings and Mayor Tommy Muska at recognition events in Dallas and West, Texas. Herrington will also attend a City Council Meeting in Waco, Texas, and thank national participants for their service. 
     
  • CNCS Chief of Staff Asim Mishra will participate in D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s recognition and awards ceremony for national service participants. 
     
  • Chief of External Affairs Ted Miller will join Columbia, S.C. Mayor Stephen Benjamin, St. Bernard Project AmeriCorps members, and Senior Corps volunteers in a service project to mud and drywall a home that was affected by last year’s floods.
     
  • Deputy Chief of Program Operation Erin Dahlin will join county commissioners and Senior Corps volunteers for a ceremony highlighting the impact of national service in Santa Fe, N.M.
     
  • CNCS board member Mona Dixon will join Mayor Greg Stanton and Vice Mayor Kate Gallego at a recognition event in Phoenix, Ariz.
