FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct 04, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – On Friday, October 7, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will host hundreds of AmeriCorps members at its headquarters to celebrate a major milestone for the national service program that started in 1994: surpassing 1 million AmeriCorps members.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, has joined NASA for this occasion because both agencies represent a hallmark of enterprising American values. The event, which will include remarks from NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden and CNCS CEO Wendy Spencer, as well as testimonials from current AmeriCorps members and alumni, will anchor a nationwide digital campaign from all AmeriCorps programs and kick-off even more swearing-in ceremonies happening across the country this fall.

This year, more than 75,000 individuals will comprise the class that includes the one-millionth AmeriCorps member. This milestone also comes as the AmeriCorps celebrates strong bipartisan support, having received last year its largest appropriations ever from Congress.

In 2013, CNCS launched STEM AmeriCorps which was announced by President Obama at the White House Science Fair “to connect more professional scientists and engineers to young students who might follow in their footsteps.” The agency has placed a priority on using national service to create public-private partnerships that spur greater interest by K-12 students in the STEM-related professions.

In addition, NASA recently became an Employer of National Service, an initiative President Obama announced in 2014 as part of the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps. NASA is among more than 400 corporations, nonprofits, federal agencies, municipal and state governments that have increased access to a dedicated, highly qualified, and mission-oriented pool of potential employees who served in AmeriCorps and the Peace Corps.
