Statement from José Phillips, Director, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, Regarding Death of National Service Member

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and fellow AmeriCorps NCCC team members of Sheldon Allmon. The physicians at Denver Health determined that Sheldon passed away Saturday evening as a result of injuries he sustained after being hit by a car on Friday.

 

“This is an incredibly heartbreaking moment, as Sheldon was preparing to begin his 10-month-long-service as an AmeriCorps NCCC member. Sheldon’s decision to join AmeriCorps NCCC marked his first time away from his Auburn, California home.  His desire to serve, strengthen his professional skills, and meet new people from across the United States compelled him to join NCCC. We are supporting his fellow corps members, program alums, and the Denver Campus staff who are devastated by this development. The safety and health of our members are our top priorities, and we are providing them with counseling and other services during this difficult time.”
