FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sep 16, 2010

Washington, DC—The Corporation for National and Community Service invites former AmeriCorps members to apply for the Eli Segal Fellowship, a year-long leadership opportunity to help advance national service policy, operations, and strategy at the agency's headquarters in the nation's capital.

This prestigious fellowship was created in 2006 to honor the legacy of Eli Segal, who was a key architect of the 1993 national service legislation and served as the first CEO of the Corporation from 1993 to 1995. Segal died in February 2006.

“Eli Segal was a giant in national service. Because of his role in launching AmeriCorps and the Corporation, combined with the entrepreneurial spirit he showed throughout his life, this fellowship is a particularly fitting way to honor Eli's life and work,” said Corporation CEO Patrick A. Corvington.

The fellowship is open to AmeriCorps alumni who demonstrate exceptional leadership, dedication to national service and its ideals, a social entrepreneurial spirit, and effective communication and analytical skills. Fellows carry out projects, advance their career development, and gain a first-hand understanding of national service and the workings of a federal agency.

“The Eli Segal Fellowship has given me an unparalleled vantage point from which to observe national service during a historic period of transition, opportunity, and growth,” said Iris Dooling, the current Eli Segal Fellow. “It has provided consistent access to executive leadership and enabled me contribute to the development of the national service movement and expansion of the AmeriCorps program. The unique perspective I gained during the past year has motivated me to continue to work toward the enrichment and improvement of national service.

Eligible applicants for the fellowship include all AmeriCorps alums who served full-time in the past three years who will be available to serve at Corporation headquarters starting in December 2010. Exceptions to the three-year limit may be made for candidates who have been in school full-time since serving in AmeriCorps, or who have been in the military or other national service programs such as the Peace Corps.

The selected Eli Segal Fellow will work directly with the Director of AmeriCorps and closely with the office of the CEO, participating in high level meetings, strategic planning, and other important work to advance the agency's mission at a time of expansion and innovation for national service.

The fellowship includes a $27,079 salary, with full benefits, for a 13 month term. The Segal family will be represented in the selection process.
