FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Aug 12, 2010

Washington, DC—The Corporation for National and Community Service AmeriCorps VISTA officials will join Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) to discuss the impact of VISTA programs in solving local challenges at the Educator's Grants Forum. The forum, held on August 12 -13, will bring state and local education leaders together to learn about federal resources to fight poverty and build economic opportunity through education in diverse communities.

More than 300 AmeriCorps VISTA members work across the state to provide a range of services including fighting illiteracy, improving health services for children and families, and increasing academic achievement and college preparedness. In Seguin, McAllen and Laredo, VISTA members help develop youth advocacy programs that serve students and families at IDEA Public Schools, promote health and wellness in the areas of early literacy and nutrition, and create new educational opportunities and curriculum for parents and preschool children.

On Thursday, AmeriCorps VISTA State and Program Specialist Katy Dooley will join Congressman Henry Cuellar, and other federal agency officials.

Friday's panel will include AmeriCorps VISTA State and Program Director Jerry Thompson, AmeriCorps VISTA State and Program Specialist LeRoy Minor, Congressman Henry Cuellar, White House Initiative on Excellence in Hispanic Education Director Juan Sepúlveda, and other state and federal agency officials.
