FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Aug 03, 2010

Visit will include tour of AmeriCorps VISTA project at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis to observe how national service is transforming local communities

Washington, DC— Patrick A. Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, will meet with local nonprofit leaders and host a community dialogue to engage diverse communities on the Corporation's new vision for national service on Thursday. Several dozen nonprofit leaders will gather to discuss the agency's five-year strategic plan to drive measurable impact toward solving local problems. Participants will include David Reingold, Chairman of the Indiana Commission on Community Service & Volunteerism.

More than 16,000 people of all ages and backgrounds are helping to meet local needs, strengthen communities, and increase civic engagement through 65 national service projects funded by the Corporation across Indiana. This year, the Corporation will commit nearly $11 million to support and improve Indiana communities through the agency's service programs – AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Specifically, in the Indianapolis area, the Corporation supports 28 national service programs, engaging nearly 3,000 local residents in service to others.

Indianapolis rank 11 among America's 51 largest cities in the number of volunteer hours committed by its residents per year, 40.9 hours, according to the Corporation's 2010 Volunteering In America report. Last year, more than 394,500 Indianapolis volunteers contributed $1.1 billion worth of service to the local economy that addresses the needs of area residents.

Corvington's visit will conclude with a tour of the Children's Museum of Indianapolis, where AmeriCorps VISTA members are developing programs that ensure youth have equal access to a quality education and museum resources.
