National Service Agency Requests Applications for September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance Grants
Washington, DC – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) released a Notice for Federal Funding Availability (NOFA) today for the 2012 grant competition for the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance grants. The deadline for applications will be 5:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, March 13, 2012. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of June, 2012.
“The mission of the CNCS is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. As we saw last year with the September 11th Challenge, there is no shortage of heroes across the country that embody this mission in the face of tragedy,” said Robert Velasco II, Acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. “These grants will further honor and support those who lost their lives on that dark day in our nation's history and well as meet important community needs.”
The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance initiative grants range from approximately $50,000 to $150,000 are made to eligible organizations engaged in service activities that meet vital community needs and honor the sacrifice of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 or who rose in service as a result of that tragedy. Available funds for the grant total approximately $500,000.
September 11th was officially recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance for the first time in 2009 by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, passed with strong bipartisan support.
In the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance competition CNCS expects to invest a significant amount of available funding to programs working on two focus areas –Disaster Services and/or Veterans and Military Families plus Capacity Building.
Successful applicants will show a demonstrated ability to increase participation in service to meet vital community needs. Applicants should be specific about how they will increase participation in this day of service and remembrance over the two-year grant. CNCS also seeks grantees that can offer ongoing opportunities for individuals to serve throughout the year.
Additionally, CNCS seeks applicants who engage youth, particularly disconnected youth, and where available, veterans and military families in service.
