What benefits are provided during and after AmeriCorps Seniors?

How do I apply to AmeriCorps Seniors?
Search opportunities using the AmeriCorps Seniors Pathfinder. Once you find an opportunity you want to apply for, use the contact info on the listing to contact the program. The program will explain next steps to apply.
How old do I need to be to serve in AmeriCorps?
The minimum age requirement for most AmeriCorps programs is 18. However, some accept applications from 16-17-year-olds. While a few programs are designed specifically for young adults, the majority of our programs have no upper age limit.
What benefits are provided during and after AmeriCorps?
Living allowance, and education award to pay for college or trade school expenses, or to repay qualified student loans, loan deferment and interest forbearance on qualified student loans, while in service, professional development, alumni network, and more. Some of our programs provide health care benefits or a stipend to purchase healthcare. You may also be eligible to receive a childcare benefit if you have children under the age of 13.

Do I need references to apply?
Yes, references are part of the online application. A valid reference must be new (within the past 24 months). You must have at least 1 personal and 1 professional reference for your application to be assessed. Professional references include: supervisors, clergy members, mentors, teachers, coaches etc. *TIP* Having 2 professional references boosts your application during the assessment process.
I am having trouble logging into the application portal. What should I do?
Use the “Forgot your Username?” or “Forgot your Password?” options to recover your login information. If you encounter other issues, please call the National Service Hotline at 1-800-942-2677 to have your account reset.

Can I serve more than one term in AmeriCorps?
There are limitations on the number of terms an individual can serve in each AmeriCorps program, and on the maximum value of education awards one individual can receive. Please visit Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for more information.

Am I allowed to use marijuana in AmeriCorps?
Possession, use, or distribution of marijuana or other illegal drugs, failing an AmeriCorps drug test, or the improper possession, use, or distribution of prescription medication are prohibited. Any member engaged in prohibited conduct related to drugs will be dismissed.

Do I have any time off?
Yes! Every Member receives three (3) paid personal leave days and two (2) paid days of leave for “Life after AmeriCorps” activities, such as applying for colleges or jobs, interviewing, taking tests like the ACT, SAT, LSAT, or GRE, or writing a résumé. You just need to get approval from your Team Leader and Unit Leader for project planning and general situational awareness. You will have to make up your service hours you miss during your time off.
There will be time during the service term that members may choose to leave at their own expense and return home or to another destination. AmeriCorps understands commitments like weddings, graduations etc. and when possible will work with members to try to accommodate time off requests for these life events. However, due to the nature of disaster work, these requests cannot be guaranteed.
Recreational marijuana is legal under state law where I am serving?
No, the status of marijuana under state law does not authorize members to use marijuana. Marijuana is illegal under federal law. As a federal program, AmeriCorps' policies are controlled by federal law. As a result, the legality of any drug is determined under federal law, not state law. Therefore, the use of marijuana while serving in AmeriCorps is prohibited.
What professional awards or certifications can I earn as part of AmeriCorps?
Members can earn the President's Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award if they meet requirements at the conclusion of their service term.
Additional training and certifications may be acquired, depending on the program and project. AmeriCorps NCCC Team Leaders receive CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
