Volunteering during a National Day of Service is a great opportunity to honor the day and serve the community. In the Mountain Home School District in Idaho, a middle school class began a school beautification project to serve as their September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance project that transformed into a year-long volunteer project.

Whitney’s sixth-grade class began the project by rehabilitating a flower planter at the entrance of their school campus. Students cleaned the planter and the school sign, gave the planter a fresh coat of paint, and added some eye-catching flowers.

The class finished the day with a reading lesson that featured stories of people directly affected by the 9/11 tragedy.

Whitney said her class was so inspired they decided to continue their service throughout the school year.

“We continued our act of service for the entire school year, caring for the planter so that it served as a welcoming sight to all who came to our school in each season,” she said. “I was glad to get the chance to facilitate this community service project for my students.”
