The Work Number® by Equifax provides fast, convenient, and secure digital service that can be used by employees when applying for loans, a mortgage or apartment, or any other circumstance where proof of employment (with or without proof of income) might be needed.  

This service authorizes third-party verifiers such as landlords, mortgage lenders, prospective employers, social service agencies, etc.) to verify employment and/or income on the employee’s behalf.  

Visit The Work Number® Site to Get Started 

  1. Go to: employees.theworknumber.com  
  2. Near the upper right corner, click “Log In”.  
  3. You will be prompted to find your Employer Code.  
    1. Enter 20958  
  4. Select “I’m not a Robot”. 
  5. Click the red Search button.  
  6. Select the “AmeriCorps” employer record.  
  7. Then click the “Select Employer” below to begin the login process.  

How to Log In 

  1. If this is your first time logging in, choose “Register Now” to set up account details. 
  2. Enter your User ID (no dashes or spaces) then click “Continue”.  
  3. Enter your PIN/PASSWORD (or select “Forgot your PIN”)   
  4. If you are a new user, enter AmeriCorps Employer Code (20958). 
    1. Once you have successfully logged in, you will create your own personal password to use as your PIN/password going forward.  
  5. You may come to a landing page that informs you that additional information will be needed. Click “Continue”.   
  6. For the next three screens, complete the requested information with your personal information so that you can be authenticated.
    1. Some users will need to authenticate with a One-Time Passcode via phone call, text, or email. 
    2. Passcodes are sent in real time, so please enter it immediately without exiting the login session or closing the browser.   
    3. If you cannot receive a One-Time Passcode, call 1-800-996-7566 for assistance (or 1-800-424-0253 (TTY - Deaf)).  

FAQs

How does employment verification work? 

Each employee is responsible for authorizing the release of their employment and salary information. Verifiers must receive an authorization code from you before they can access your information through The Work Number®. Once they receive the authorization code from you, the verifier goes to www.theworknumber.com where they can access (with our permission) the employment information they are requesting. 


What if I just need a letter to provide proof of income and employment? 

The Work Number® provides a self-service option that will allow you to provide income and employment information to credentialed verifiers outside of an income or employment verification request. Once you establish and log into your account at https://employees/theworknumber.com, navigate to the “Letters” tab for more information. 


Can members and volunteers use The Work Number® Service to verify their employment with AmeriCorps?

Unfortunately, The Work Number® service is only available to federal employees working with AmeriCorps.

For members and volunteers looking for support with employment verification, we recommend the following:

  • AmeriCorps State and National members, please contact your local state/national program directly.
  • AmeriCorps VISTA members, please fax all employment verification requests to 703-206-7276 or forward your requests to VISTAVerify@amercorps.gov.

They should include the authorized release document with the employee’s visible signature on the document. The signed release document MUST be included with your request.  Documentation should be sent to the applicable contact listed above.
