National Service Budget Update

Last Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a spending bill that provides $1.366 billion for the Corporation for National and Community Service and its programs. This is an increase of $215.9 million over last year’s funding level but $51 million below the President’s request.

Following is a breakdown of the funding:
AmeriCorps Grants: $440,000,000
AmeriCorps VISTA: $111,000,000
AmeriCorps NCCC: $35,593,000
National Service Trust: $271,186,000
Senior Corps: $229,100,000

Foster Grandparents Program: $115,600,000
Senior Companion Program: $49,500,000
Retired Senior Volunteer Program: $64,000,000

Learn and Serve America: $40,198,000
Social Innovation Fund: $60,000,000
Volunteer Generation Fund: $10,000,000
Nonprofit Capacity Building Program: $10,000,000
State Commission Administration: $18,000,000
Disability Placement Funds: $6,000,000
Evaluation: $8,000,000
Innovation and Demonstration: $3,509,000
Serve America Fellowships: $1,000,000
Training & Technical Assistance (Subtitle J): $11,000,000
Salaries and Expenses: $103,000,000
Office of Inspector General: $9,000,000

As the bill moves through the legislative process, we will continue to push for full funding of the President’s FY 2011 request. As social needs continue to mount, and as Americans look for ways to give back, national service is a critical, cost-effective investment that engages citizens in tackling our most serious challenges in education, health, clean energy, economic opportunity, veterans, disaster response, and other critical issues.
