***Media Advisory***
Washington, DC—U.S. Secretary Arne Duncan will join Patrick Corvington, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service to launch the United We Serve: Let’s Read. Let’s Move. summer initiative on a conference call on Tuesday, June 8 at 10 a.m.
Let’s Read. Let’s Move. is an Administration-wide effort to get more Americans volunteering to help combat childhood obesity and summer learning loss by engaging youth in summer reading and physical activity as well as providing access to healthy, affordable foods. Research shows that a staggering percentage of youth suffer learning loss over the summer and gain unhealthy eating habits. The initiative also harnesses the support of national and community organizations and corporate partners to reach a broad, diverse group of youth in big cities and rural communities. The federal agency partners include the Departments of Education, Interior, Agriculture, and Health and Human Services.
First Lady Michelle Obama will officially announce Let’s Read. Let’s Move. at a service event with Members of Congress and their spouses at the Kennedy Recreation Center on Tuesday.
