Mayor Bloomberg, Rep. Lowey, and National Service CEO to Announce $28 Million in AmeriCorps Grants for New York

Washington DC – New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), and Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Patrick Corvington will hold a press conference at 4:30 om Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at City Hall in New York City to announce AmeriCorps grants for New York state-based organizations.

The AmeriCorps grants total more than $28 million and will go to 28 national and local nonprofits organizations based in New York State to support thousands of AmeriCorps members who will teach, tutor, and mentor youth, expand health services, provide job training and financial literacy, prevent substance abuse, weatherize homes, support people with disabilities, and more. They are the first grants made since enactment of the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act signed by President Obama last year.

AmeriCorps programs engage approximately 85,000 people each year in intensive, results-driven service through more than 3,300 nonprofits across the country. In exchange for 1,700 hours of service, members earn a $5,350 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to help pay for college or pay back student loans. Since 1994, more than 637,000 AmeriCorps members have given 774 million service hours in their communities.
