$3.3 billion in AmeriCorps scholarships earned since 1994; $1 billion to repay student debt

Washington, D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has released new data showing the total amount higher education and loan-holding institutions have received in Segal AmeriCorps Education Award payments since the program’s inception in 1994. A full list of payment amounts to these AmeriSchools by state can be found here.

For decades, the AmeriCorps program has helped Americans pursue their dream of higher education by making it more accessible and affordable. After completing their service, full-time AmeriCorps members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of nearly $6,000 that can be used to pay for college or technical school, or to pay back student loans. Since 1994, AmeriCorps alumni have earned more than $3.3 billion in education awards, using $1 billion to repay student debt.

In addition, CNCS recognizes the vital role these AmeriSchools play in fostering a campus of service, while developing young men and women into civic-minded citizens. Studies show that AmeriCorps alumni, with their demonstrated commitment to service, also make excellent students with a strong civic attitudes, diverse skills, and leadership abilities. Recognizing these skills, more than 180 colleges and universities across the country actively recruit AmeriCorps alumni by offering scholarships or matching tuition funding for AmeriCorps alums.

AmeriCorps improves college access in other ways. AmeriCorps members across the country serve as mentors, helping high school students select courses, prepare college applications, apply for financial aid, and take other steps to apply for and complete college.  Numerous colleges across the country operate or host AmeriCorps programs – engaging thousands of AmeriCorps members in service each year. Many of these members are current college students who are enhancing their own education as they meet community needs by serving as mentors, tutors, and more.
