Communities In Schools (CIS) of Central Texas: Austin ISD AmeriCorps Outcomes Evaluation

Communities In Schools (CIS) of Central Texas recruits, trains, and supports AmeriCorps Members who provide both individual and small group support to CIS students. The program’s goal is to positively impact 4th and 5th grade students’ academics, behaviors, and perceptions of school.
Study Goals:
The goal of the study is to analyze the impact of working with AmeriCorps Members on CIS students’ academic outcomes, including achievement, behavior, and attitudes. The study used a quasi-experimental research design that compared treatment and comparison groups to analyze outcomes.

Literacy First K–1 Report, the 2017-18 Impact Evaluation

Literacy First is an AmeriCorps program that provides trained tutors for students in kindergarten through second grade in the Austin, Texas area. Literacy First’s early literacy program is designed to strengthen students’ early reading and comprehension skills (e.g., phonemic awareness, letter sound identification) through daily, 30-minute tutoring sessions. The program identifies struggling readers each fall and provides tutoring across the school year.

As a dropout prevention program, it provides a support system to at-risk students, encouraging them to be successful in elementary, middle, and high school.

Breakthrough Evaluation Report

Breakthrough is a program for low-income students who would be the first in their family to attend college. It is offered in the Manor Independent School District and includes learning assistance and personalized case management support.

Study Goals

This study looks at Breakthrough’s objectives by comparing program participants and non-participants. It compares them on academic achievement, attendance, and personal factors in fifth grade and then every two years after. The study summarizes two sets of preliminary results:

Breakthrough Austin Impact Study

Breakthrough is a college preparation program for low-income students who will be the first in their family to graduate college. The program offers an academic bridge program for sixth-grade students before their seventh-grade year. It also includes continuous academic and social support for students to graduate high school and enroll in college.

Sí Texas: Social Innovation for a Healthy South Texas (Sí Texas) is a project of the Social Innovation Fund (SIF) Grantee Methodist Healthcare Ministries (MHM) of South Texas, Inc. The Sí Texas project team and a portfolio of eight subgrantee organizations from 12 medically underserved South Texas counties tested different approaches to integrated behavioral health (IBH) to improve the physical and mental health of low-income, Hispanic populations.
