Summer of Service is a simplified version of NCCC’s other programs, on a shortened timeframe. Participants will pursue the same NCCC mission of “strengthening communities and developing leaders through service", plus the option to serve with a friend.

As with all other NCCC programs, members will participate in pre-service training, albeit a shorter version, and serve on teams. NCCC teams will have project sponsors, site supervisors, and address a community-identified priority. APPLY NOW!

Summer of Service projects will focus on:

  1. disaster response and recovery;
  2. environmental stewardship and/or natural resource management;
  3. affordable housing; and/or
  4. other types of community-focused service activities.

Examples of typical summer projects include cabin maintenance, education projects such as tutoring, mucking and gutting homes affected by disasters, trail maintenance, and construction, supporting food banks to alleviate hunger, and other community identified priorities.

AmeriCorps NCCC’s Summer of Service Program: This Is Your Moment

NCCC Position Options

Member

Members will begin their Summer of Service experience with about 10 days of training – the Corps Training Institute – at an AmeriCorps NCCC campus in Vinton, Iowa, or Aurora, Colorado. During training they’ll meet their new team, learn the skills they need to get started, and find out where their summer adventure will take them! Each team will have about 8-10 unique 18- to 26*-year-olds, including one team leader at their helm, who will live, travel, and serve together. Members will be responsible for earning at least 300 service hours, participating in physical training, and taking part in various team activities to successfully complete the program. Want to serve together with a friend this summer? You can! Check out the FAQs linked above for more information and apply for a summer of service!

Team Leader

Have a knack for organizing, communicating with, and inspiring people to work together? Looking for the next level of challenge, skill-building, and résumé enhancement in your Summer of Service experience? Apply to be a team leader! Each team leader will supervise a group of about eight to 10 members, guiding them through their term. In addition to serving alongside their members, they’ll manage daily tasks, be the liaison with the project sponsor, and complete other responsibilities, like managing the team’s budget. Team leaders will travel to their assigned campus a couple weeks before member arrival to complete Team Leader Training. Anyone can apply to be a Team Leader! Prior service experience is not required.

“AmeriCorps was the perfect way to spend the summer making a positive impact in a community. I am passionate about service, and with my next career step being the Peace Corps, I felt that AmeriCorps really helped strengthen me to tackle the unexpected, to become comfortable with the uncomfortable, and to remain positive throughout unforeseen challenges" - Gabriel
