STEM AmeriCorps program to expand to 15 new communities

NEW YORK – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced an effort to expand STEM AmeriCorps, an initiative first announced by President Obama at the White House Science Fair. The federal agency is inviting partners to expand the initiative to 15 communities across the country.

I want to thank some strong supporters of national service who are here today.
On Friday September 12, President Obama will host a ceremony at the White House with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), President Bill Clinton and hundreds of AmeriCorps members to celebrate the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps and recognize the 900,000 Americans who have served through AmeriCorps over the last two decades. The President will announce new commitments to improve pathways to employment for AmeriCorps alumni, encourage community service by young people and expand national service opportunities.  These announcements include the following:

Thousands of Americans unite to improve communities across the country

 

 
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Presidents Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush will join President Obama in marking the 20th anniversary of the AmeriCorps national service program on Friday, September 12. 
 
President Clinton will join President Obama in delivering remarks to hundreds of AmeriCorps members on the South Lawn of the White House, and will appear by video at pledge ceremonies around the country.  President George H.W. Bush will participate in an AmeriCorps pledge ceremony at his home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

 

September 12 White House Event Marks 20th Anniversary of AmeriCorps

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Obama will participate in a ceremony with AmeriCorps members at the White House on September 12 as part of a nationwide event marking the 20th anniversary of the AmeriCorps national service program. 

Provides More than 1 Million Dollars for Innovative Program

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  – The city’s Running Start for Careers program has been selected to receive $1.6 million in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency which administers the AmeriCorps program. Over the next three years, this funding will support 84 AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps VISTA members.

NEW YORK CITY -- Abe Sierra grew up in Boston, with few resources and fewer role models. He dropped out of high school but eventually got his GED and joined City Year as an AmeriCorps member. Serving as a tutor for elementary school students gave him purpose and the motivation to do more.
