Dear Colleagues:

Today President Obama submitted to Congress his FY 2010 budget request for the Corporation for National Service and our programs. Our complete budget justification document is available now on our budget page; below is a brief summary of its contents.

"Thank you Rick for that kind introduction and thank you for including me in tonight’s festivities.

"It is a pleasure to join you all.

"There are few times in history when the saying ‘we are all in this together’ would be more applicable than now.

"Events like this one show how truly connected our world is;

"how one person’s invention can create an entirely new economy;

"how one person can change how we see the world.

"The ability of one person to influence the outcome of someone else’s life inspires me.

Washington DC -- AmeriCorps is turning to its far-flung network of members and alums for help in recruiting the next class of AmeriCorps members by hosting a video and photo contest as part of AmeriCorps Week.

Dear Colleagues,

On April 21, 2009, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law, ushering in a new era of service and volunteering for our nation.

The Act charges the Corporation for National and Community Service and our partners to dramatically expand opportunities for Americans to serve, to focus on critical national issues, to be a catalyst for social innovation, and to support the nonprofit sector. The law both expands our existing programs and creates new initiatives to increase service opportunities and strengthen our civic infrastructure.

Washington D.C. -- President Obama’s pledge to make service a central cause of his presidency has resulted in major achievements in the first 100 days, from passage of landmark legislation expanding service opportunities to funding new AmeriCorps positions to inspiring Americans to help their neighbors at a time of need.

Albuquerque, NM – Capping off a big week for service, Acting CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service Nicola Goren traveled here today to swear in the first of up to 13,000 AmeriCorps members funded by the Recovery Act, putting boots on the ground to assist Americans hardest hit by the economic downturn.

Washington, DC – This afternoon at 4:00 pm President Obama will sign into law the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, a broadly bipartisan bill that represents the most sweeping expansion of national service in a generation. He will also deliver remarks calling on people across the country to serve their communities and work together to tackle the challenges facing the nation.

Dear Colleagues,

Earlier today President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act into law. He was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden, which demonstrates more powerfully than words this Administration’s commitment to national service. It was the most exciting moment of my nine years on the board of the Corporation, and I know it’s the beginning of many great things to come.
