A Proclamation

During National Volunteer Week, we acknowledge the many Americans who generously give their time and talents to help improve the lives of others.  Their acts of kindness help build a better and brighter future, and remind us that we all have a role to play in making our communities safer, healthier, and stronger.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) today announced more than $13.6 million in funding to support senior volunteer service in more than 150 communities across the country. The Senior Corps grants will both strengthen existing programs and establish new areas of service for the Senior Corps RSVP program.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 5, 2019) --  A new independent report that provides evidence that consistent volunteering can improve the health and well-being of people age 55 and older was released today by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for the nation’s volunteer and service efforts.

Last night we lost an American hero. On the day we celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we said goodbye to Harris Wofford. Harris was a tireless champion for national service, a patriot who loved his country, a beloved friend and mentor to many, and a guiding light who called us to serve and lifted our sights to achieving America’s promise for all.

From enlisting in the Navy at age 18, to serving as a decorated World War II naval pilot, as ambassador to China and the United Nations, as CIA director, vice president, and the nation’s 41st president, he devoted his entire life to public service.
